Τhe roots are where we create!

Τhe roots are where we create!

Vamvakou Revival Team

The departure from our roots is one of the reasons for the economic, social and value crisis that Greece is experiencing. We forgot where we started, we overlooked our starting point and left villages in their fate. Nothing survives without physical existence and nothing can revive without human presence. Life in the village is in and of itself a challenge. We would call it a social experiment. Of course it takes strength to create the right conditions, but we have a vision to keep moving forward and to believe in a new Greece with improved rural life. Our willingness is to make Vamvakou an example, a model for the similar projects accross the country.

The Anargyros, Takis, Tasos and Haris connection with Vamvakou is the traditional Greek relationship that a young man develops with his village. This means summers there with grandparents, bike rides, playing in the square, injured knees, ice creams and unforgettable moments. A love affair brought Eleni to Vamvakou. She has spent beautiful summers there and found in Vamvakou the village she was missing when she was a child.
For each of us of course, Vamvakou has a special place in our hearts. Vamvakou means “shelter” for Anargyros, “love” for Eleni, “roots” for Takis, “care” for Tasos, “space for expression” for Haris. Nevertheless, our village is what we just call “reference point” for all of us.

Weird beings the young… They have a unique gift, which with the right use can give them the power to move and change the world. The intuition, a feeling… It was perhaps what pushed us to start working on the Vamvakou Revival project. Sometimes, you don’t have to look very deep within you in order to act. It suffices to have the will for work, the passion for change and a hidden complaint for the situation around you that you set your heart on forming it. You want to be involved in something new, fresh and different.
Vamvakou is an open road that we are trying to run. The village has been tested by history, has been hit by emigration and the financial crisis, and is now asking for our participation to begin a new chapter.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation gives us the paper and the pen…
The next day it depends on us…
We should fill the blank pages of a “new” story…

What aspect of the “new” Vamvakou are we most looking forward to? When children’s voices are heard, when the first bell is heard in the village school, then we can talk about a new Vamvakou and a revival plan with a measurable result! Until then… work… work… work…
