April, the month of blossoming and Easter, at Vamvakou in Lakonia!

Easter in the village, pastry making, Formula 1, classical music and much more

Holding hands with spring, April has arrived to fill the air of Mount Parnon with the scent of lilac! This month, the philosopher and scientist Democritus, Formula 1, a well-known pastry chef, virtual reality, classical music and tradition get together in Vamvakou. Join us to experience an authentic traditional Easter in the village, while participating in activities realised by Vamvakou Revival, within the framework of the initiative for the revival of Vamvakou with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Biscuity and sweet April Fools’ Day (01/04)

April begins with pastry making and fills us with sweetness! The well-known pastry chef Christos Vergados will initiate us into the secrets of Easter biscuits and sugar paste. Kids and grown-ups will be able to test their talent for pastry making using sugar, food colours and sprinkles at the school of Vamvakou!

When Democritus met F1 at V.Lab  (08/04)

This month, Vamvakou Revival celebrates the beginning of two new important collaborations at V.Lab (Vamvakou Technology Lab fully powered by SNF). In collaboration with the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, we will study the story and findings of the great philosopher and researcher Democritus through the programme “Democritus – What an atomic individual!”
The programme F1 in Schools makes it to Vamvakou and, thus, primary school students, under the guidance of Dimitris Polimatidis, get the chance to design their own Formula 1 racing car in small scale and practice in groups in fields such as research and development, innovative thinking, sustainable project management and engineering.

Easter in Vamvakou (14-17/04)

This year, let’s celebrate Easter in the village in an original way! On Good Friday, following the Epitaph procession, Oros Ensemble presents “Lament & Rebirth”, a music performance in an ambience of devoutness, which focuses on lament both as an expression of loss and as the ultimate pursuit of consolation and healing. On Holy Saturday, the little visitors of the village will be able to get familiar with classical music instruments and Greek traditional sounds and participate in short individual lessons on specific instruments, music listening and discussion, on-the-spot composition, as well as in music play! What’s your music score? On Easter day, the custom calls for a traditional Easter feast with a folk band in the village square and traditional tastes and other delicacies cooked in wood-fire ovens. On Easter Monday, we are waiting for you to meet “Visarionas A. Bakakoulis” in a puppet show for kids.

Oros Ensemble returns to its roots before going on a tour (22/04)

Having established Vamvakou as the starting point for its artistic journeys and as a “lab” for its music experiments, Oros Ensemble will present here its new programme that will then travel throughout Greece. Can music express in a contemporary way the collective memory and sensitivity, by pursuing to connect with the inhabitants and the place as such?

Educational programmes and activities for all at the School

And as if all this weren’t enough, this month, at the school of Vamvakou, we are inviting children to become farmers and discover an organic “vegetable garden and its secrets” (02/04) and make an Easter wreath full of colours and wishes, as they used to do “once upon a time” during the feast of Saint George (22/04). The programmes of the National Library of Greece continue with “sowing as in old times” (23/04) through the marvelous book “From little acorns” by Sam Godwin. Are you more like a tree, an animal or a mountain? Join us to communicate, have fun and connect to nature with yoga and theatre play (29/04). A different school, a school that resembles no other, a school open to all is inviting us on Sunday 30/04 to play and spend our time creatively.
