The initial gathering of individuals and groups involved in revitalizing mountain communities, held in Vamvakou from October 3 to 5, 2025, and organized on the initiative of Vamvakou Revival, concluded successfully. This meeting established the foundations for creating a cooperation network, enhancing the potential for collective action, knowledge transfer and interconnection. Dimitris Kyriazis served as the discussion coordinator, a key partner in the event organization and the connecting link among all of us.
“Ta Psila Vouna” [the high mountains] (Demati Zagoriou), Filippos Fragkoulis (FeelForest) (Skamneli Zagoriou), Oikotopia (Kalochori, Epirus), “Agrafa Heritage” (Agrafa), “KOINSEP Oreini” (Argyro Pigadi – Municipality of Thermos), “YAMOCHORI” (Makria Logga, Aitoloakarnania), “Nea zoi sto chorio” [new life in the village] (Fourna), “Arkadiani” and Eftychia Mpouka (Psari, Gortynia) — all joined us in Vamvakou. Together, we presented our actions, shared challenges, exchanged best practices and expertise, discussed common concerns, such as the housing problem, and explored ways to attract new residents, financial tools and opportunities for the agri-food sector and its development. We formulated solutions and proposals focused on the value of respecting people, culture, tradition and the places themselves.
Different people and organizations originating from regions such as Epirus, Western and Central Greece, and the Peloponnese—so distant yet so similar—share different models of development and approaches to regeneration; yet, all share the same concerns, purpose, and vision: that mountain villages should not be a concept of the past, but the present and future of our country!
Vamvakou Revival, which implements the Vamvakou Revival Initiative with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), has consistently prioritized cooperation and the exchange of expertise. Through such initiatives, it aims to position Vamvakou as a model for the regeneration of areas, fostering dialogue and collaboration centered on the sustainable development of the Greek countryside.
We would like to warmly thank Dimitris Kyriazis and all participating organizations for their presence, substantial contributions, and willingness to share a common vision. At the same time, we remain dedicated to maintaining this momentum and continuing the dialogue.
New friendships, partnerships and plans have just begun, and the future looks promising!
Come to take the mountains with us!
