W(h)oman | GNO Ballet

Vamvakou square

As a habit that has become a cult, the Ballet of the Greek National Opera (Ballet ELS) will be with us again this year at Vamvakou and the Vamvakou Experience Festival, the dance production W(h)oman, choreographed by Eva Georgitsopoulou with music by Nefeli Lysimachou, which with the state of readiness experienced by contemporary femininity as a starting point and draws inspiration from the elegance and power of the bodies’ femininity.

Unrest could be perceived as a sign of a cunning intelligence, an expression of curiosity, concern, of a certain relentlessness to break out of familiarities and the readiness to care for what is fragile and threatened, for what exists and could exist. Unrest is a prerequisite for survival.

In a composition that abstractly imitates the innate ability of a pack of animals to detect danger and respond to it, performers collectively explore their ability to adapt through movement, discreetly transforming their shapes, qualities and trajectories—either to amplify their presence or conceal their identity, averting the possibility of being regarded as prey.

W(h)oman incarnates the poetry of self-protection, creating a refuge for bodies that have mastered the art of vigilance, paradoxically revealing their innate elegance and resilience.

The work W(h)oman, with music by Sebastian Diakakis Nilos, was first presented by the Greek National Opera Ballet as part of the contemporary dance triptych Colors at the GNO Alternative Stage at the SNFCC in 2023.

Eva Georgitsopoulou, a dancer and choreographer from Patras, based in Berlin, studied law while simultaneously dedicating herself to dance. A graduate of the National School of Dance (KSOT) in Athens, she has collaborated with prominent artists, including the Aerites Dance Company/Patricia Apergi. Since 2019, she has been an active member of Sasha Waltz & Guests company in Berlin, continuing to contribute to various productions. Her choreographic works have been presented at several festivals and venues across Europe, such as the Greek National Opera, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, the Arc For Dance Festival, and others.
