As part of our collaboration with THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY Arts & Culture Research Lab Observatorium (TTS), the 13th “Breaking Bread” project is brought to the village, and the traditional artistry of breadmaking revives in Vamvakou. A study of the art of table bread, and bread baking tradition that combines tasting and sharing knowledge, secrets and experiences.
A hands-on experience set up at the location “Stathmos Sygkiniseos” focusing on table bread will bring residents, visitors and experts together. Nomade et Sauvage will hold an open gastronomic event, an open fire bread tradition performance. Village housewives and professional bakers will lead the breadmaking process, while participants of all ages will have the opportunity to knead their dough and bake traditional bread over an open fire. Once bread is baked, participants will gather at the Nomade et Sauvage “table of offerings”, where they will share bread with olives, olive oil and wine, in a symbolic communal table meant to celebrate the power of togetherness and tradition.
Traditional clarinet and lute sounds by Alexandros Arkadopoulos and Ilias Kapakos respectively, will complement this special multisensory musical experience full of flavors, scents, memories, textures, ingredients and the enjoyment of the handmade.
A bread tasting workshop led by bread sommelier Dimitris Fragogiannis will follow. Participants will be asked to
describe bread qualities such as appearance, crust, crumb and aroma, and each group will develop a narrative of tastes based on the most impressive bread qualities to share with the rest of the group members.
A few words about the project
In 2023, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary since the adoption of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO 2003), the “Bread & Charcoal” project was funded by and implemented under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports; it is currently implemented thanks to funds by TTS. Twelve (12) hands-on activities focusing on bread have been warmly embraced by the public in villages, squares, clubs, museums, industries and catering facilities, conveying the message that table bread is of great significance, uniting people in the Greek province. The name of the project, “BREAKING BREAD”, is interpreted as the cutting of bread by hand, which is then shared among the tablemates.
